Chronic Disease Management and Climate Change: What Bushfire Seasons Teach Us About Health Resilience

Exploring how Australia's intensifying bushfire seasons are reshaping the way we approach chronic illness care and community health resilience.

Australia’s increasingly severe bushfire seasons are highlighting a growing public health concern: the vulnerability of individuals living with chronic illnesses during climate-related emergencies. This article explores the critical intersection of climate change and Chronic Disease Management, revealing how events like the 2019–2020 Black Summer have exposed gaps in healthcare preparedness. It discusses the importance of proactive care plans, regional health innovations such as telehealth, and the role of local practices like Chronic Disease Management – Googong Family Practice in building health resilience. The piece concludes by emphasising the shared responsibility of individuals, communities, and healthcare providers in preparing for a future where environmental and health crises are increasingly interconnected.

An estimated 80 percent of the crop has been harvested across the Darling Downs and south to Goondiwindi, with only small volumes of later-planted sorghum remaining.

Harvest has wrapped up in northern New South Wales, where strong sorghum yields in pockets have helped offset a smaller planted area, while desiccation is under way on the Liverpool Plains.
