How I became a Fettler in 1964

How I became a Fettler in 1964

by Rob Bell

My name is Rob Bell, and I was born in East Bankstown (later Greenacre) in 1945, into a solid working-class family. By 1964, 5 years after leaving Punchbowl Boys High, I was requested by the local gendarmes to leave town. This was also issued to many of my friends who, like myself, travelled down the wrong roadway.

A friend who had been off the scene for a while was back in town and was going on about working on the railway as a fettler in a place called Burren Junction. Where the hell is B.J., we all cried, North West NSW, have you heard of Walgett? Well, it's this side of Walgett, and they are looking for workers.

So come Monday, we all troop down to Central Station (about 6 of us) for a medical and get the guts on this Fettler business. Being good, strong Aussie boys with an average age of around 20, we were in. Some of us were sent to Cryon and others to BJ.

10 Expert-Approved Ways to Stay Healthy During Work Stress

A glass of water on a desk with a person typing on a computer keyboard in the background.
Imagine your workplace as a battlefield, where stress is the relentless opponent threatening your health. But what if you could armour up with expert strategies that not only defend but enhance your wellbeing?

This article unpacks 10 expert-approved tactics, grounded in the wisdom of allied health professionals, to help you stay healthy amidst the whirlwind of work pressures.

From the nuanced practices of osteopathy to the precise adjustments of chiropractic care, get ready to transform your workday into a journey toward wellness.

1. Prioritise Proper Posture

Poor posture isn't just an aesthetic issue—it's a precursor to chronic pain that can derail your productivity and mood. Osteopaths emphasise the importance of maintaining a natural spinal curve, advocating for ergonomically designed workspaces.

Osteopaths, such as those at the Blackwood Osteopathy Clinic, emphasise the importance of maintaining a natural spinal curve, advocating for ergonomically designed workspaces

Invest in a quality chair that supports your back, and consider a standing desk to vary your posture throughout the day. Continual awareness of your body's alignment can prevent the onset of musculoskeletal disorders.

2. Schedule Regular Breaks

The power of pause cannot be underestimated in the battle against work stress. Chiropractors recommend taking brief but frequent breaks to disrupt prolonged sitting, which can lead to spinal strain and decreased circulation.

Stepping away from your desk every hour for just a few minutes can boost your circulation and help realign your posture. Use this time to stretch or engage in a quick walk. This not only rejuvenates your body but also clears your mind, enhancing creativity and focus.

3. Embrace Movement

Incorporating movement into your day is like hitting a reset button for your body and mind. Osteopathy promotes regular physical activity to keep the body’s joints and muscles flexible and strong, which can combat the stiffness associated with desk jobs.

Whether it’s a morning yoga routine, a midday walk, or an evening cycle, the key is consistency. Regular exercise releases endorphins, your body's natural stress relievers, and keeps your musculoskeletal system in prime condition.

4. Hydrate and Nourish

Fueling your body with the right nutrients and staying hydrated is essential for maintaining energy levels and focus. Nutritional advice from allied health professionals often includes eating balanced meals that provide a steady release of energy, avoiding spikes and crashes.

Carry a water bottle and aim for 2–3 litres per day to keep your mind sharp and your tissues hydrated. Snack on fruits, nuts, and seeds instead of reaching for sugar-laden treats. You may also support your nutritional needs with clean, high-quality supplements like Pure Protein Grass Fed Whey Protein Isolate, which offers a convenient way to maintain energy and aid muscle recovery—especially if your workday involves physical or mental exertion.

This not only sustains your energy but also supports overall health.

5. Manage Stress with Breathing Techniques

Breathing exercises are a cornerstone of both osteopathic and chiropractic care, used to reduce stress and improve physiological functions. Diaphragmatic breathing, in particular, can help manage anxiety and stress by triggering the body’s relaxation response.

Practice breathing techniques daily, especially during high-pressure periods. This can lower your heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and promote a calm, focused state of mind.

6. Optimise Your Sleep

Quality sleep is non-negotiable when it comes to health. Chiropractic care stresses the importance of a supportive mattress and a proper sleeping position to ensure restorative sleep. A good night's sleep helps mitigate the adverse effects of stress, bolstering your immune system and cognitive function.

Aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine and keep your bedroom environment conducive to rest, which means cool, dark, and quiet.

7. Foster Social Connections

Building and maintaining relationships provide emotional support that can buffer the effects of work stress. Allied health professionals recognise the therapeutic value of social interaction in maintaining mental wellness.

Make time for lunch with colleagues or a quick catch-up call with a friend during the day. These moments of connection can offer significant relief from the pressures of work and boost your mood.

8. Set Boundaries and Say No

Learning to set healthy work boundaries is crucial in maintaining mental health. Overcommitting can lead to burnout, a state all too familiar in high-pressure environments. Osteopaths and chiropractors alike advise patients to listen to their bodies and respect their limits.

Be assertive about your capabilities and time constraints. Saying no is not only a right but a necessary practice to ensure you can give your best without sacrificing your health.

9. Seek Regular Professional Care

Regular visits to an osteopath or chiropractor can do wonders for your overall health by preventing potential issues before they escalate into serious problems. These professionals can provide personalised advice and treatments that enhance your body's natural healing abilities and resilience against stress.

Consider setting up routine check-ups as part of your health regimen. This proactive approach can keep you at your peak, both physically and mentally.

10. Create a Relaxation Routine

Establishing a routine that includes activities you enjoy can significantly reduce stress levels. Integrating therapeutic massage therapy into your relaxation routine can provide profound benefits, such as alleviating muscle tension, improving circulation, and promoting overall mental well-being.

Integrating relaxation into your daily life is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity for long-term health and productivity. Treat this time as a sacred appointment with yourself, non-negotiable and essential for your wellbeing.

Staying Healthy Amidst Work Stress

Embracing these 10 strategies isn't just about coping with work stress—it's about thriving despite it. Integrating the wisdom of osteopathy and chiropractic care into your daily routine can lead to significant improvements in your physical and mental health.

In the corporate world's rush, the true victory lies in maintaining your health and wellness. Start today, because a healthier work life is not only possible—it's within your reach.
