How I became a Fettler in 1964

How I became a Fettler in 1964

by Rob Bell

My name is Rob Bell, and I was born in East Bankstown (later Greenacre) in 1945, into a solid working-class family. By 1964, 5 years after leaving Punchbowl Boys High, I was requested by the local gendarmes to leave town. This was also issued to many of my friends who, like myself, travelled down the wrong roadway.

A friend who had been off the scene for a while was back in town and was going on about working on the railway as a fettler in a place called Burren Junction. Where the hell is B.J., we all cried, North West NSW, have you heard of Walgett? Well, it's this side of Walgett, and they are looking for workers.

So come Monday, we all troop down to Central Station (about 6 of us) for a medical and get the guts on this Fettler business. Being good, strong Aussie boys with an average age of around 20, we were in. Some of us were sent to Cryon and others to BJ.

How Pool Covers and Blankets Gold Coast Residents Use Are Saving Water, Energy, and Time

Published on Thursday, March 27, 2025

How Pool Covers and Blankets Gold Coast Residents Use Are Saving Water, Energy, and Time

A smart solution for saving water, cutting energy costs, and making the most of your Gold Coast pool.

Across the Gold Coast, backyard pools are a source of enjoyment, relaxation, and family fun. But for homeowners looking to reduce costs and environmental impact, one addition is making a surprising difference: pool covers and blankets.

By addressing water loss, heat retention, and cleanliness, pool covers and blankets Gold Coast residents are adopting offer real benefits with minimal effort.

Why Pool Covers and Blankets Make a Difference

A high-quality pool cover isn’t just about keeping out leaves. It actively supports your pool’s health and reduces your overall upkeep. Here’s how:

  • Reduces evaporation: Pools can lose thousands of litres of water each month due to sun and wind exposure. A cover helps minimise this loss.

  • Maintains warmth: Solar and thermal blankets keep heat trapped in the water, extending your swimming season without increasing energy bills.

  • Cuts cleaning time: Fewer leaves and insects mean you spend less time with a skimmer and more time enjoying the water.

This makes them especially attractive to time-poor households looking for simple, effective solutions.

Gold Coast Conditions and Pool Efficiency

With its sun-soaked weather and long swimming seasons, the Gold Coast is paradise for pool owners—but that also comes with unique challenges.

Strong UV exposure and fluctuating humidity mean your pool can lose both water and chemical balance quickly. Pool covers help buffer against this:

  • By reducing UV impact, they slow chlorine degradation

  • They help retain heat from the sun

  • And they reduce the need for constant top-ups

These efficiencies make pool covers a smart investment, particularly in regions where drought awareness and energy costs are always top of mind.

What to Look for in a Quality Pool Cover

Not all covers are created equal. If you’re in the market for a new one, here are key features to look for:

  • UV-resistant materials: Essential in the Queensland sun

  • Custom sizing: To ensure proper coverage and safety

  • Ease of use: Roller systems (manual or motorised) can make deployment easy

  • Drainage and safety features: Especially for families with young children or pets

Investing in a well-fitting, durable cover means fewer issues down the track—and a much more enjoyable swimming experience overall.

PP Pool Blankets: Designed for Gold Coast Conditions

When looking for pool covers designed specifically for the Queensland lifestyle, PP Pool Blankets offer reliable, efficient solutions.

These covers are built to endure the intense sun, seasonal winds, and varied pool types found across the Gold Coast. Whether you need a solar blanket for passive heating or a debris cover to reduce cleaning, PP Pool Blankets provide a great starting point to compare your options.

Saving Money and Reducing Environmental Impact

Many Gold Coast families are turning to pool blankets not only for convenience but also to cut household costs. A quality blanket can:

  • Lower heating bills by up to 70%

  • Reduce water loss by 30–50%

  • Minimise chemical usage due to better chlorine retention

This makes pool blankets an ideal option for those trying to live more sustainably—an increasingly common goal as highlighted in Climate-conscious living tips for regional Australians.

Final Tips for Pool Owners

To get the most from your pool blanket:

  • Clean it regularly to prevent mildew or degradation

  • Store it correctly during the off-season

  • Check for signs of wear every 2–3 years to maintain performance

  • Opt for a pool cover roller if convenience is a priority

A good pool blanket won’t just save money—it’ll save time and effort, making pool ownership more enjoyable and eco-friendly.

Conclusion

Whether you’re managing your pool’s temperature, water use, or just the time you spend on upkeep, pool covers and blankets Gold Coast homeowners are choosing are making a measurable difference. They're an investment in better living, from cost savings to comfort—and with the added bonus of reducing your environmental impact.

If you're planning your next backyard upgrade, it may be time to take a fresh look at the humble pool blanket—and discover just how smart, stylish, and sustainable it can really be.
