Fuel Chaos Grips the Nation

Fuel Chaos Grips the Nation

12 March 2026 - Author Stephen Gardiner

A wave of mild hysteria swept across the region this week as towns up and down the highway reported dwindling fuel supplies. Drivers were spotted forming queues longer than a Centrelink phone wait, clutching jerry cans like they were rare artefacts from a bygone civilisation. Rumours spread faster than a harvest fire: “No fuel by lunchtime!”, “Servo’s dry!”, “Someone filled a Hilux AND a boat—selfish bugger!”

Local councils issued calm, measured statements encouraging residents to “avoid panic buying,” which of course triggered even more panic buying. One town reportedly saw a man attempt to siphon petrol from his own lawnmower “just in case.”

But in the midst of the chaos, one community remained perfectly, serenely unfazed.

Burren Junction.

While the rest of the region scrambled, Burren locals simply shrugged, sipped their coffees, and carried on with their day. When asked how they were staying so calm during the crisis, one resident replied:

“Mate… Burren Junction ran out of petrol 15 years ago.”

Kamilaroi Highway set for major rehabilitation to boost safety and resilience

Published: 3 March 2026 Released by: Minister for Roads

A vital stretch of the Kamilaroi Highway west of Burren Junction is set for significant rehabilitation, with the Minns Labor Government delivering long-term improvements to one of north-west NSW’s most important road corridors. From Tuesday, 3 March, work will begin on a full rehabilitation of a three-kilometre section between Walgett and Cryon, near the Goangra–Beanbri intersection, where the pavement has continued to deteriorate despite routine and heavy patching. Rather than temporary fixes, crews will carry out a full pavement rehabilitation to rebuild and restore the road surface, improving ride quality and strengthening the highway for the long term.

Why Hiring Experienced Painters in Newtown Makes All the Difference for Your Home

Discover how expert painters in Newtown can transform your home’s appearance, boost property value, and deliver long-lasting results with precision and care.

Newtown, with its mix of eclectic charm, historic homes, and urban lifestyle, is one of Sydney’s most vibrant suburbs. As property values rise and renovation trends surge across the Inner West, homeowners and investors alike are looking for ways to preserve and enhance their homes' appearance. One of the most impactful and cost-effective improvements? A professional paint job. That’s where painters in Newtown with true experience and skill come in.

From terrace homes with heritage features to sleek modern interiors, painting isn’t just about colour — it’s about technique, surface preparation, and understanding how to make a home look its absolute best while protecting it from the harsh Australian climate.

The Value of a Quality Paint Job

Painting may seem straightforward at first glance, but it’s a skilled trade that requires training, preparation, and a deep understanding of surfaces and finishes. A high-quality paint job adds not only visual appeal but also value and longevity to a property.

According to a report by OpenAgent, homes with well-maintained exteriors and fresh paint can increase in value by up to 2-5% (source). In a competitive real estate market like Newtown, this can mean the difference between a property selling quickly and one sitting on the market.

More than just monetary value, painting also impacts how a space feels. Whether you’re living in the property or preparing it for sale or lease, professionally painted interiors and exteriors may make a space feel cleaner, brighter, and more inviting — contributing to both comfort and emotional appeal.

DIY vs. Professional Painters in Newtown

While there’s a certain sense of satisfaction that comes from DIY projects, painting is one area where cutting corners may backfire. Amateur painting may lead to poor adhesion, visible roller marks, uneven surfaces, and an overall subpar finish that ultimately requires a professional to redo the work.

That’s why homeowners are turning to professional painting services from Aston & Co. Their team brings over a decade of experience painting homes and businesses across Newtown and surrounding suburbs. From heritage homes requiring careful restoration techniques to modern builds needing crisp, contemporary finishes, Aston & Co delivers durable, tailored results that stand the test of time.

The key advantage? Professional painters like Aston & Co don’t just focus on aesthetics — they also ensure the integrity of surfaces. This includes inspecting for signs of moisture, mould, or deterioration before painting even begins. Their preparation process (which may include sanding, priming, and patching) is meticulous, ensuring a smooth, long-lasting finish that won’t peel or fade prematurely.

Newtown’s Unique Painting Needs

Newtown presents a mix of architectural styles, from classic Federation homes to industrial apartments and contemporary infill housing. Many properties in the area have weatherboards, render, or brick exteriors, each requiring different paints, preparation techniques, and application methods.

Local knowledge is critical. Not only does it help painters navigate council requirements and heritage overlays, but it also ensures the selected materials suit Sydney’s humid summers and wet winters. The professionals at Aston & Co understand these nuances and tailor their services accordingly.

They also understand the community. Newtown homeowners often place a strong emphasis on sustainability and eco-conscious living. Low-VOC and environmentally friendly paints are increasingly popular, and reputable painters are staying up to date with the best options available on the market.

Interior vs. Exterior: Getting Both Right

A beautifully painted interior sets the tone for your entire home. Neutral colours may make spaces feel larger and brighter, while accent walls or bold hues can add personality and sophistication. Good painters know how to balance modern design trends with your home’s architecture and natural lighting.

When it comes to exteriors, paint does more than just enhance kerb appeal. It protects your home from UV damage, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. Proper sealing and weather-resistant paints can extend the lifespan of your surfaces, particularly in Newtown where older homes are common and may require more frequent maintenance.

It’s also worth noting that regular painting and upkeep may help avoid larger, more costly repairs down the track — particularly if you catch wood rot, water damage, or rust early.

Choosing the Right Painter in Newtown

When hiring a painter, don’t just look for the cheapest quote. Instead, focus on reputation, experience, and attention to detail. Ask to see a portfolio of past projects, check for licensing and insurance, and look for a painter who takes the time to understand your needs.

Aston & Co Painting & Decorating ticks all the boxes, offering friendly service, clear quotes, and a commitment to delivering high-quality results without cutting corners. They work closely with clients to ensure colour choices, timelines, and budgets are all aligned, taking the stress out of the process.

In fact, many homeowners have discovered Aston & Co through local word-of-mouth or publications like Namoinews’s community spotlight — highlighting how local trades and services are enhancing homes across the Inner West.

Painting for Property Investment

If you’re an investor in Newtown, strategic painting may also increase rental appeal. Prospective tenants often make decisions based on first impressions, and freshly painted interiors and exteriors may position your property as more modern and well-cared-for.

According to a Domain article, tenants are increasingly prioritising quality finishes and clean, well-maintained spaces (source). A relatively small investment in painting may justify higher rents or attract better-quality tenants — a win-win for landlords.

Additionally, commercial properties in Newtown — such as cafés, retail shops, and shared workspaces — benefit enormously from professional paintwork that aligns with brand identity and enhances customer experience.

What to Expect from a Professional Painting Service

Engaging a reputable painter like Aston & Co generally involves:

  • A detailed consultation to discuss needs, goals, and colours

  • A written quote outlining the scope of work and materials

  • Surface preparation including cleaning, patching, sanding, and priming

  • Use of premium paints tailored to the space (interior/exterior, weatherproofing, etc.)

  • Clean-up and final inspection to ensure quality and satisfaction

It’s also a good opportunity to explore additional services like feature walls, wallpaper removal, or textured finishes — all of which can be provided by experienced local professionals.

Support Local, Invest Wisely

Painting is more than a visual upgrade — it’s a protective layer, a design statement, and a smart investment. Whether you're refreshing a home for sale, updating your own space, or preparing a rental for the market, investing in the right professionals may save you time, stress, and money in the long term.

If you're exploring ways to refresh your Newtown property, this guide on home maintenance tips from Namoinews is also a helpful starting point.

But when it comes to getting the job done right, nothing beats the results that come from professional painting services from Aston & Co.

Let the experts bring your vision to life — and give your property the finish it deserves.
