Fuel Chaos Grips the Nation

Fuel Chaos Grips the Nation

12 March 2026 - Author Stephen Gardiner

A wave of mild hysteria swept across the region this week as towns up and down the highway reported dwindling fuel supplies. Drivers were spotted forming queues longer than a Centrelink phone wait, clutching jerry cans like they were rare artefacts from a bygone civilisation. Rumours spread faster than a harvest fire: “No fuel by lunchtime!”, “Servo’s dry!”, “Someone filled a Hilux AND a boat—selfish bugger!”

Local councils issued calm, measured statements encouraging residents to “avoid panic buying,” which of course triggered even more panic buying. One town reportedly saw a man attempt to siphon petrol from his own lawnmower “just in case.”

But in the midst of the chaos, one community remained perfectly, serenely unfazed.

Burren Junction.

While the rest of the region scrambled, Burren locals simply shrugged, sipped their coffees, and carried on with their day. When asked how they were staying so calm during the crisis, one resident replied:

“Mate… Burren Junction ran out of petrol 15 years ago.”

Kamilaroi Highway set for major rehabilitation to boost safety and resilience

Published: 3 March 2026 Released by: Minister for Roads

A vital stretch of the Kamilaroi Highway west of Burren Junction is set for significant rehabilitation, with the Minns Labor Government delivering long-term improvements to one of north-west NSW’s most important road corridors. From Tuesday, 3 March, work will begin on a full rehabilitation of a three-kilometre section between Walgett and Cryon, near the Goangra–Beanbri intersection, where the pavement has continued to deteriorate despite routine and heavy patching. Rather than temporary fixes, crews will carry out a full pavement rehabilitation to rebuild and restore the road surface, improving ride quality and strengthening the highway for the long term.

The Growing Role of RWS Settlements in First-Home Buyer Success Stories

First-home buyers in WA are turning to RWS Settlements for trusted support during one of lifeโ€™s biggest milestones.

For many Western Australians, buying a first home is one of life’s biggest milestones. The process is exciting, but it also comes with financial challenges, complex paperwork, and the pressure of strict deadlines. That’s why more first-home buyers are recognising the role of professional settlement agents in ensuring the journey runs smoothly. In Western Australia, RWS Settlements has become a name linked to clarity, trust, and practical guidance during what can otherwise feel like an overwhelming experience.

First-Home Ownership in Western Australia

Western Australia’s housing market has seen significant shifts in recent years. Demand for homes in Perth and regional areas continues to climb, with population growth and lifestyle changes driving competition. At the same time, affordability challenges and the rising cost of living add stress for new buyers.

Government schemes such as the First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) and stamp duty concessions have made property ownership more accessible. Still, these incentives come with eligibility criteria, deadlines, and documentation requirements that aren’t always straightforward for those navigating the process for the first time.

This is where professional settlement support becomes invaluable. By ensuring every legal and financial step is handled correctly, settlement agents give first-home buyers the confidence to move forward without unnecessary delays.

For a broader look at how WA’s property landscape is changing, readers may be interested in local property market updates.

The Challenges First-Home Buyers Face Today

For first-time buyers, excitement is often mixed with uncertainty. The challenges they encounter typically fall into three key areas:

  • Financial pressures – Rising property prices can make it harder to secure finance, while unexpected costs during settlement may strain budgets further.

  • Legal complexity – Contracts of sale, transfer of land documents, and compliance requirements are full of terms that can be confusing to someone new to the process.

  • Time constraints – With strict deadlines for finance approval, inspections, and settlement, even a small delay can create a ripple effect that impacts the entire purchase.

These challenges aren’t unique to WA, but in a competitive market, mistakes can cost buyers dearly. It’s not unusual for new owners to feel overwhelmed before they even pick up their keys.

Recent coverage on cost-of-living pressures further highlights the hurdles many young people face when taking their first step into the property market.

How RWS Settlements Supports First-Home Buyers

Settlement agents play a central role in making sure property transactions stay on track. They act as the link between banks, real estate agents, government departments, and the buyer or seller. For first-home buyers, this means having someone on hand who understands the fine print and knows what needs to happen at every stage.

RWS Settlements offers exactly that type of support. Their team ensures that:

  • Contracts are checked thoroughly for accuracy and compliance.

  • All documents are lodged with the correct authorities by the required deadlines.

  • Buyers are kept informed about each stage of the process.

By managing the technical side of settlement, they allow first-home buyers to focus on preparing for life in their new property rather than worrying about whether a form was signed or a payment was lodged on time.

Real-Life Success Stories: Why Professional Help Matters

Behind every first-home purchase, there’s a story. Some buyers may save for years only to find that one missing document threatens to derail their settlement. Others may face unexpected complications with finance approval just days before handover.

In such situations, a settlement agent’s role becomes more than administrative. By liaising with banks, negotiating with sellers’ agents, and flagging potential issues early, they may prevent deals from falling apart.

One common example is buyers who don’t realise the importance of council approvals on a property. Without proper checks, they could inherit unresolved compliance issues. A settlement agent reviews these details, ensuring surprises are avoided long after moving day.

It’s not just about avoiding problems—it’s about creating peace of mind. Many first-home buyers later describe the relief of knowing a professional was managing the behind-the-scenes details so they could focus on moving into their new home.

Government Grants and Incentives for First-Home Buyers

In WA, incentives like the First Home Owner Grant provide valuable financial support, but understanding eligibility and applying correctly can be daunting. Similarly, stamp duty concessions can significantly reduce upfront costs, yet buyers often miss out due to technical oversights.

Settlement agents play an important role in helping buyers maximise these benefits. They ensure applications are submitted correctly and deadlines are met, so first-home buyers don’t miss opportunities for financial relief.

With RWS Settlements involved, buyers have someone in their corner who understands both the incentives available and the paperwork required to secure them.

Looking Ahead: The Future of First-Home Ownership in WA

The path to first-home ownership is unlikely to become easier overnight. Rising property demand, population growth, and evolving government policies will continue to shape the market. Yet one thing is certain: settlement agents will remain vital to the process.

As buyers become more informed, many are choosing to involve settlement agents earlier in their journey, not just at the final stages. By doing so, they minimise risk, reduce stress, and give themselves the best chance of a smooth transition into home ownership.

For WA’s next generation of first-home buyers, the support of professional services like RWS Settlements could make all the difference between a stressful experience and a success story.

Conclusion: A Smoother Start to Home Ownership

Buying a first home is both exciting and challenging. While affordability, paperwork, and deadlines may create obstacles, settlement agents provide the guidance and structure needed to overcome them. With professional support, buyers are better positioned to navigate the process confidently and secure their place in the WA property market.

For anyone preparing to take this significant step, the role of RWS Settlements shows how professional expertise may transform a daunting process into a milestone worth celebrating.
